Screen Time and Eye Health: What Every Parent Should Know

Your child has been doing homework on a laptop since third grade. They FaceTime their friends, watch videos on a tablet, and, if you've looked away for more than ten minutes, potentially even have multiple screens going at once. Sound familiar?

That’s the world that we live in now. Screens likely aren't going away anytime soon. And honestly, neither is the parental guilt that comes with handing one over. But the question most parents want answered isn't whether screen time is bad. It's what, if anything, screentime is doing to their kids' eyes, and what they can realistically do about it.

The good news is that the picture is more manageable than the headlines suggest. Here's what the research actually says.

What Screens Really Do To Our Eyes

Let's start with what screens don't do: they don't cause permanent eye damage. Despite what some alarmist articles might imply, there is no solid evidence that looking at a screen will irreversibly harm your or your child’s eyes.

What screens do—reliably, and in a significant portion of people who use them heavily—is cause a cluster of uncomfortable symptoms that researchers call digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome. A 2024 meta-analysis examining over 66,000 participants across more than 20 countries found that approximately two in three regular screen users experience some degree of digital eye strain symptoms. It's one of the most common vision-related complaints of the modern era.

The main mechanism is surprisingly simple: when we look at screens, we blink significantly less than we normally would. That reduced blink rate disrupts the tear film—the thin, protective layer that keeps your eyes lubricated and comfortable—and the result is the familiar burning, gritty, tired feeling that tends to build over the course of a day of screen use. 

Add in the sustained focusing effort required to track text and images on a screen, and you have a recipe for eyes that feel genuinely exhausted by evening.

Symptoms of digital eye strain include:

  • Blurry or fluctuating vision, especially after long screen sessions
  • Dry, burning, or irritated eyes
  • Headaches, particularly around the forehead or temples
  • Difficulty focusing when switching between near and far distances
  • Neck and shoulder tension from leaning toward a screen

The important thing to know is that these symptoms are temporary and manageable. They're not a sign of permanent damage, but they are worth paying attention to, and in children especially, they can show up in ways that aren't immediately obvious.

Signs Your Child's Eyes Might Be Struggling

Kids, particularly younger ones, often don't have the vocabulary to tell you their eyes hurt or feel strained. They just know something is off, and that typically shows up in their behavior before it shows up in words.

Behaviors and Symptoms To Watch for:

  • Frequent headaches, especially after school, homework, or screen time
  • Squinting at screens, holding devices closer, or leaning into them closer than usual
  • Rubbing their eyes during or after screen use
  • Avoiding reading or other close-up tasks

A Separate Concern Worth Knowing About: Myopia

Digital eye strain is a comfort issue. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a longer-term issue, and it's worth understanding the distinction.

A 2025 systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis published in JAMA Network Open found a significant association between screen time and the development and progression of myopia in children. The more time spent on screens, the higher the associated risk. 

It's important, however, to understand the potential causation: the concern isn't the light from screens specifically. It's the sustained near work—close focusing for extended periods—combined with reduced time spent outdoors that appears to be the driving factor.

This matters because it reframes what parents can actually do about it. Cutting screens entirely isn't realistic. Encouraging more outdoor time is, though, and the research supports that meaningfully.

A 2024 meta-analysis of nearly 13,000 children aged 6 to 16, published in Ophthalmic Research by the National Institutes of Health, found that spending more time outdoors is associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing myopia in children who don't yet have it. To put some numbers to it: compared with around 3.5 hours of outdoor time per week, getting 7 hours per week was associated with a 20% reduction in the risk of myopia onset. At 16 hours per week, that figure rose to 53%.

One important nuance: the same study found that outdoor time does not appear to slow myopia progression in children who are already diagnosed with myopia. If your child is already in glasses, outdoor time is still great for them, but it's not a substitute for proper eye care and monitoring.

What Parents Can Do: Realistic Habits That Help

None of this requires overhauling your family's relationship with technology. Small, consistent habits make a real difference.

The 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It sounds almost too simple, but a 2025 peer-reviewed study in the Indian Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology confirmed it as an effective behavioral intervention for reducing digital eye strain symptoms. Building it into homework time, as a quick break every 20 minutes, is easy enough for kids to remember and gives their eyes a genuine chance to reset.

Screen distance and positioning. Screens should sit roughly arm's length away and slightly below eye level. Many kids naturally drift closer over time, especially when they're tired — it's worth checking in on this occasionally.

Lighting matters more than most people think. Screens in dark rooms create high contrast that accelerates eye fatigue. Ambient lighting that roughly matches screen brightness makes sustained screen use noticeably more comfortable.

A word on blue light glasses. You've probably seen them marketed heavily — and if your kid has asked for a pair, they're not alone. The honest answer is that current research doesn't support their use as a meaningful solution for eye strain. A 2023 Cochrane systematic review—the gold standard of clinical research—analyzed 17 randomized controlled trials and concluded that blue-light-filtering lenses probably make no difference in eye strain symptoms compared with non-filtering lenses. They're not harmful, and there's some limited evidence that they may help with sleep disruption when worn in the evenings specifically. But if you're buying them expecting relief from daytime screen discomfort, the science doesn't back that up.

Outdoor time. As noted above, regular outdoor time is the best-supported preventive factor for the onset of myopia in children. The research points to natural light exposure — not just physical activity — as the key variable. Even building in 60 to 90 minutes of outdoor time each day is worth prioritizing, particularly for kids who spend significant time on devices.

A screen-free wind-down before bed. Screens before bed affect both sleep quality and visual recovery. A 30- to 60-minute buffer before sleep is good for eyes and rest alike, and, unlike most screen-time guidance, this one has solid support from sleep research as well.

When to Bring It To Your Eye Doctor

Healthy habits help, but they're not a substitute for regular eye care. Here's when it might be worth making an appointment:

  • Your child is overdue for their annual exam. School-age kids should be seen every year. Vision can change frequently during childhood, and annual exams are how you stay ahead of those changes.
  • Your child is showing persistent symptoms—headaches, squinting, rubbing their eyes—that don't improve after a week or two of better screen habits.
  • You've noticed behavioral changes around reading, schoolwork, or screen time that feel like more than normal kid restlessness.
  • Your child has never had a comprehensive eye exam, or it's been more than a year since their last exam.

Adults aren't off the hook either!
