Top 6 Fall Eyewear Trends for 2022
Fall brings warmer color tones, soft sweaters, and longer sleeves (and pumpkin-flavored everything). It’s the perfect time to revamp your wardrobe or just add a new stylish accessory that’ll elevate your everyday look.
No matter your style, on-trend frames are an easy way to add style points to your outfit. Over the years, we’ve seen eyewear trends shape and shift. This fall, several retro styles are even back full-force. But one thing is for sure in 2022: bolder is better.
As eye care masters by trade, we’re adding the (self-proclaimed) title of eyewear trend experts to our resume, because we’ve seen a lot of eyes in our day. And we know what’s new, hot, and trending right now. Here’s a deep dive into the top eyewear trends for 2022 to help you find the right style this fall.
Trend 1: Oversized
This fall, as they say, bigger is better. Like oversized clothes, oversized frames are back to help you make a statement with your eyewear. This trend works in any shape, so pick the right one to suit your face and you’ll instantly elevate your outfit.
Here’s a hot tip on how to pick the right shape for your face. The general rule of thumb is to choose a frame shape that is the opposite of your face shape. For instance, if you have a square face, opt for rounded frames. If you have a round face, rectangular frames will work best. Triangular faces will also look best in more rectangular frames, while oval face shapes will look best in rounded frames.
With so many options, the best bet is to choose the frames that you feel most confident in. But this trend is best suited for the fashionable.
Trend 2: Clear frames
Clear frames rose in popularity this year and we think they’re here to stay. If you Google search “blue light glasses”, your results page is sure to be overpopulated with clear-framed options, from oversized to rounded and more. And now, eyeglasses and readers have also caught on to the trend.
Aside from their obvious style and charm, there are two things we love about the clear-frame trend: First, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, making them work for everybody. And second, we’re starting to see clear frames in other muted colors, helping the fashion-forward show off their unique style with one trend. We’ve seen them in pinks, blues, yellows, and even greens. Choose any color and you’ll add the perfect, subtle pop of color to your everyday look.
Writer’s block? Not with these on. This trend is for the creative and techy.
Trend 3: Thin metal frames
Thin metal frames are one of fall’s hottest trends. The wider styles add a bit of 90s grunge to your look, while the rounded styles give a bit of vintage flair. Lightweight and durable, these frames come in a variety of finishes—from gold to rose gold to black to silver—so you can pick your favorite.
Throw them on before your next Zoom call or even for the grocery store to show that you’re smart, savvy, and stylish. They say, I have it all together but I barely had to try to look this cool today.
Trend 4: 1970s throwback frames
Another comeback style for 2022? The retro frames were made famous in the 1970s. You know the ones your grandpa is donning in all those old family photos? Cool then, maybe even cooler now.
We love the balance of retro shades with a sleek blazer. Or you can go all-in on the throwback style and pair them with a funky top and corduroy pants.
Also pairs well with Fleetwood Mac and fringe bangs.
Trend 5: Acetate frames
Easy on the environment; easy on the eyes. As the world grows increasingly environmentally conscious, we bet these Earth-friendly frames will be longer-lasting than some other eyewear trends. Acetate frames are made with cellulose, a renewable and natural resource found in plants, making them a more environmentally-friendly option than conventional plastics (made from petroleum). Plus, they’re durable yet lightweight and comfortable.
Even better, they are made of hypoallergenic materials, so they won’t irritate your skin unlike some metals.
Acetate frames say, I’m saving the planet but I’m sure as heck looking chic while doing it.
Trend 6: Tortoiseshell frames
Tortoiseshell is always in style. The warm tones and classic shapes make it the perfect complement to any outfit. They pair as well with a little black dress as they do a suit, meaning they’re great for men and women alike.
Pairs as well with Sunday brunch as it does your Monday morning commute.
